American West: 1920s
ODG uses three vastly distant points of reference to establish a landscape that overshadows a caravan: a shimmering cloud, a reflective cliff face and a slab of red rock. Even with a selfie-worthy sunset and a near cloudless sky - nature remains a looming presence the travelers must reconcile. Thick and unblended brush strokes recall Grover's years in Europe learning from American Master Frank Duvenek and absorbing the impressionic leanings of the day - or perhaps slowly drifting out of sight of the main caravan made this painting more impressionistic.
